Amazon Redshift Spectrum now directly queries Ion and JSON Data Types

Amazon Redshift Spectrum can be used now to directly query an Ion and JSON data type that is stored in the external tables in Amazon Simple Storage Service without transforming or loading the data. RedShift Spectrum is a feature of Amazon Redshift that allows customers to use the existing Business Intelligence tools to analyze the data stored in the Amazon Simple Storage Service Data Lake. JSON is an open standard file format which is commonly utilized for asynchronous browser-server communication. Ion is a data serialization format that is developed by the Amazon to offer an unambiguous semantics for long-term preservation of the data.
